How does it work?
Simple!
We work with you to identify the data required. There's various ways the data can be loaded - you can email it to us on a regular basis, we can set up an automatic feed to extract the data from your system into the NFWV, or you can upload manually from the NFWV itself.
We'll help get your internal and external stakeholders identified and onboarded, and give them access to the NFWV. Once you're all set up, you'll have unlimited access to the NFWV and continuous support from our technical services helpdesk. |

Project Information
Click on a coloured area (this denotes a project or an event) and it will bring up the summary of that project. This will give you information such as start and end dates, description of the project, and the contact details of the person who's responsible for the project, as well as any clashes and opportunities. |
Stages and Impacts
Projects can be a stand alone project, or can have multiple stages, each with their own project boundary, start and end date, and traffic impacts. |

Here's seven reasons why you should use the National Forward Works Viewer
Single source of truth
The NFWV is New Zealand's single authoritative repository of future planned infrastructure projects.
You're in good company
The three largest councils in New Zealand choose to use this tool as business as usual, and we are onboarding more organisations every day - including utility companies, developers and construction companies - there's heaps of data in there which you can access.
No surprises
Because everyone's sharing their data, it means when you're planning your work programme, you'll get no surprises - you'll be able to view other works happening in the area, including which roads are impacted, how long the project is planned for, the status of projects and who to contact for the project.
Be effective and efficient
Having access to all this information enables you to plan your works effectively and efficiently, build relationships with other project owners, mitigate risk, avoid public disruption and share resources.
Collaboration through conversation
Being able to see the contact details of the project managers working in your region means you can easily contact them and have conversations you wouldn't be able to have otherwise.
Knowledge is power
The NFWV also provides a rich source of contextual information which is being added to continuously. Information such as asset networks (water pipes, power networks etc), earthquake-prone buildings, bus routes, oversized vehicles routes, on-street parking bays etc. Using this contextual information you can plan your work with more confidence - knowing the risk that your project is exposed to from the surrounding built environment.
It's free
Best of all - for most, it's free to use*! There's no charge for using the NFWV if you just want to view data. If you want to on-board your whole organisation and load your programmes - there's normally no charge for this too - contact us today at [email protected] to get started.
*Each region has an anchor subscriber which means that everyone else gets access for free. Check with us to see if your region is covered. If it is not we're happy to find an anchor subscriber and get NFWV rolled out in your region.
Success Stories
Keeping Wellington Moving
A number of projects planned over several months on one of the city’s critical connector routes meant collaboration and coordination was key to minimising public disruption, ensuring parliament could function and businesses were not impacted. |
Reputational Savings
Multiple infrastructure upgrades required on an important connector route in Auckland led to the organisations involved using the NFWV to coordinate their works and share their trenching to reduce public disruption and save $460k in the process. |
Preventing a near miss
The 2015 Christchurch Marathon was routed past the Christchurch Central Police Station, which was due to be demolished on the same morning. The clash was noticed and the demolition rescheduled to allow public safety. |

Background
Built in response to the 2011 Christchurch earthquakes which destroyed parts of the city, it was developed with input from LINZ (Land Information New Zealand), CERA (the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority), CCDU (the Christchurch Central Development Unit), CTOC (the Christchurch Transport Operations Centre) and SCIRT (the Stronger Canterbury Infrastructure Rebuild Team) with the aim of creating a single, integrated view of forward works activity and projects.
This allowed the multiple agencies working on the Christchurch rebuild to coordinate works more efficiently whilst minimising inconvenience to businesses and the public.
It was a success – saving an estimated $13.3million over 18 months after its initial roll out through reduced clashes, shared trenching and road works, as well as improved customer satisfaction, enabling easier event planning and improving contractor relations.
Since then, it's been adopted as business as usual by Christchurch City Council, Auckland Transport, Wellington City Council and Queenstown Lakes District Council, with more organisations being on-boarded every day.
