Do I need to pay to use the Forward Works Viewer?
The Forward Works Viewer is a not-for-profit SaaS tool owned by the Digital Built Aotearoa Foundation and operates under an anchor subscription model.
Each region requires an anchor subscriber - usually an alliance or the local government, which in turn unlocks the region for everyone else. Coverage of NOC contracts and the state highway network is covered by a separate subscription directly with Waka Kotahi NZTA as the RCA.
If your region already has an anchor subscriber, you are able to use the FWV for free - both viewing data and adding your own project data to check for clashes and opportunities. If your region doesn't have an anchor subscriber, you're welcome to use the FWV as view only, but you will not be able to add data to the system and view clashes and opportunities with your projects.
If you're not sure if your region has an anchor subscriber, email [email protected] and we can let you know.

What does the subscription cover?
The monthly subscription covers:
- access to all features of the Forward Works Viewer
- unlimited number of licences for users in the region
- an onboarding process which includes data discovery, data upload, training and collateral, assistance with launch of the software, assistance with business processes to embed the software - for all organisations within the region who adopt the software
- continual upload of data to the Forward Works Viewer using our extract-translate-load process
- unlimited support from our helpdesk to all users in the region
The subscription also supports the overheads of running the Forward Works Viewer, such as hosting, maintenance, bug fixes etc and pays for the small team operating the system (Open Plan - read more about us here!). Any profit is reinvested back into the system for continuous improvement of the tool.

A note on our pricing model
We employ a population based pricing model as this seems like the fairest way to determine region size and usage of the system. However our pricing model can be negotiable as we acknowledge that one size doesn't fit all funding models, and we don't want cost to be a barrier for entry. The purpose of the Forward Works Viewer is to promote collaboration, reduce clashes and enable more efficient project planning - making money is not our intention. Our overall goal is to reduce our subscription fees when we reach a point of sustainable growth - there's not many companies that can say that!
